Event description

Description

Is it possible to imagine politics and the political emerging from the body, pleasure, spirituality, creativity and the construction of communities of feeling? What traditions of thought and practices are necessary to construct the political and politics in this way?

Constructing the political in this way can we challenge or dialogue with hegemonic conceptualisations of the political? What would be the reach of our dialogues?

In Cali, Colombia there is an experience of popular education, feminism and nonviolence that is attempting to visibilise these different dimensions of the political and politicise the totality of life in all its dimensions. The School and one of its co-founders, Norma Bermudez are in Newcastle to dialogue about these experiences.

About the Presenter:

Norma Lucia Bermudez is a member of the Centre for the Study of Gender, Women and Society at Valle University, Cali Colombia. She is an academic activist with experience working with the UN, regional government, NGOs and social movements in relation to combating gendered violences in Colombian society and developing methodologies that work inclusively and democratically with marginalised women and children. She has published numerous papers in relation to these topics and developed training models for those working in this area. She is also co-founder of the Escuela Politica de Mujeres Pazífica, Political School of Pazifica Women which develops feminist, nonviolent activist-education.
