Description

Mass timber building seminar

Jonathan Evans, Director, Tzannes Architects & Richard Hough, Consultant, Arup.

CPD Seminar... 2 formal points... Architects, Builders, Interior Designers...

2017 saw further significant advances in mass timber construction. Timber buildings throughout the world continue to grow taller, with Mjøstårnet in Norway the new pace setter at over 80 metres in height. In recent years regulatory authorities have moved to allow taller timber buildings in many countries including USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Finland and Australia. Hundreds of prefabricated mass timber buildings have been erected in the UK alone, starting from zero in 2000.

Here in Australia, Lend Lease have completed International House at Barangaroo with architects Tzannes - a 7 storey commercial development and Australia’s first office building constructed entirely from mass timber. Lend Lease, also with Tzannes, have recently announced plans for a "sister development" at Barangaroo, constructed from CLT and glulam and due for completion in 2019.

What are we to make of this renewed interest in one of our oldest construction materials, and what opportunities does it represent for designers, specifiers, contractors and developers?

At this seminar Jonathan and Richard will:

  • Explore the claims made for mass timber buildings regarding speed, height, weight, quality, operational energy, healthier indoor environments and smaller carbon footprints
  • Use local and global examples of recent mass timber projects to review multi-discipline design issues, and trends in prefabrication and construction methods
  • Consider how mass timber can work together with concrete, steel, polymers and glass to optimise the performance of composites and hybrids.

When and Where:
Sydney
March 20, 201 Kent Street, Sydney, 6pm - 8pm

Tickets and Pricing:
$65 per person or $400 for group of 10 (includes drinks & finger food). All prices are subject to GST.

Presenters

Jonathan Evans
Jonathan is Design and Timber Technology Director at Tzannes Architects and leads the company’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions for the built environment. He is seeking a new and more sustainable way of building our future cities by utilizing the benefits of mass timber prefabrication and on-site renewable energy generation to supplement good passive design strategies and long life span through enduring architecture. Jonathan is project director for International House Sydney, currently the tallest open plan commercial building in the world utilising a mass timber structure, receiving numerous national and international awards for the innovative design

Richard Hough
During 30 years as a Principal and structural engineer with Arup, Richard Hough has been involved in many timber projects, including Australia’s largest timber gridshell roof, longest span laminated veneer lumber building, and longest span timber concrete composite floor system. As Coordinator of Arup’s global Multi-Storey Timber Research Network, he has been reviewer for many large mass timber projects here and in the USA, UK and Europe. He presents regularly at the World Conference on Timber Engineering, and has served as juror for the Australian Timber Design Awards. He believes timber’s popular resurgence offers a third way alongside concrete and steel, providing more choice for the construction industry and for clients - resilience through diversity.
