Event description
Poetry reading by international author, poet and Gunai woman Kirli Saunders as part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

About this Event

The reading will be held in Artbank’s exhibition Tjungu Palyangku Tjukurpa titutjara kuṉpu ngaranytja-ku I As we come together we stand strong for our story with a light morning tea held afterwards.

Kirli Saunders is the founder and manager of the Poetry in First Languages program at Red Room Poetry and has delivered language workshops to thousands of students and community members across New South Wales. The workshops connect schools with Elders, language custodians and poets who support both Indigenous and non-Indigenous kids to create poetry in First Nations languages. Kirli has also been recently shortlisted for the 2019 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards for her children’s book, The Incredible Freedom Machines.

Artbank’s exhibition brings together artists from the Tjungu Palyu Art Centre in Nyapari, South Australia to harness the power of video and painting to share Tjukurpa (stories) in their language, Pitjantjatjara. The works assert the importance of language and the ongoing preservation and celebration of Aṉangu culture.
