Event description

Description

Presented in association with Critical Path

Kinstillatory Mappings in Light and Dark Matter is a new process-based work in development by Emily Johnson and her global collaborators. The project is about ways of being and ways of making. It is research and process as ceremony. It is dance. It is writing about dance. It will be shared as dance, text and public gathering. Audiences are invited to come to showings of work within Adhocracy. The showings will present work developed during a two week long residency.

Emily Johnson is a First Nations artist from USA. Originally from Alaska and of Yup’ik descent, she is currently based in New York City where she is director of dance company Catalyst. A Guggenheim Fellow and Bessie award winning choreographer, she creates work that considers the experience of sensing and seeing performance. Her dances function as installations, engaging audiences within and through a space and environment, interacting with a place’s architecture, history, and role in community. Emily’s four-part work SHORE was presented at Yirramboi First Nations Arts Festival in Melbourne, 2017.

Kinstillatory Mappings in Light and Dark Matter offers a framework for exploring decolonial practices of embodiment, site-responsive choreographic practices and their relationship to land, and the radical relationships that are created through dance making and other forms of artistic activation.

Artists participating in the residency include:

Amala Groom
Caleena Sansbury

Cayleigh Davies
Chelsea Farquhar
Cinzia Schincariol
Jennifer Eadie
Jessica Martin
Kate Power
Michele Saint-Yves
Sinsa Mansell
