Event description

Description

Archae-aus, a cultural heritage management consultancy based in North Fremantle, have been appointed by City of Fremantle to undertake archaeological investigations for the Kings Square redevelopment project. Kings Square has undergone many changes since it was established in 1833. Archaeological excavations will be undertaken in areas between High Street and Newman Court. Archaeologists will be looking for evidence of the 1840s predecessor to the current St John’s Church, that used to stand in the centre of the Square. The archaeologists expect to unearth the earlier church foundations as well as historical material from the late 1800s. These will shed new light into what life was like in Fremantle during the early nineteenth century.

During the excavation the Musuem of Moving Objects and Archae-aus will conduct on-site archaeology finds workshops. These will allow participants to take part in the recording and processing of artefacts from the actual excavation. You will be insturcted by the on-site archaeologists on how to record the objects that have been found on the excavation and how to process them ready to leave the site. You will see the archaeologists at work and be part of the finds team unearthing Fremante's past.
