Event description

Description

Kingborough Council has invited residents across Kingborough to have their say on the Draft Waste Management Strategy for the municipality. Sustainable Living in Kingborough (SLiK) is excited to offer a facilitated submission writing forum to assist the community in coming up with the very best ideas and innovative options for managing waste in this beautiful municipality, into the future. SLiK envisages an emphasis on reduction of waste through adoption of efficient and sustainable governance and effective community engagement. "Best practice" is referred to throughout the draft strategy. We want it but what is it? What does this mean for you?

SLiK will present key points from the draft management plan, identify gaps and opportunities and provide some innovative strategies being used in other municipalities. The forum will include; brainstorming and capturing community ideas and concerns, prioritise strategies and making a submission on the groups behalf. Alternately the forum will assist you or your group in making your own informed submission.

Background information

The aim of the Strategy is to achieve a planned and collaborative approach to waste management in Kingborough. Feedback received from the Waste Management Survey published last year has helped to shape the strategy, making sure community needs and expectations have been considered in its development.

MRA Consulting Group was commissioned to assess the results while developing the strategy, and four goals have been identified to deliver both a cost effective and efficient service for Kingborough residents. These goals are:

  • increased recycling rates,

  • best practice waste and resource recovery infrastructure,

  • efficient and sustainable governance and

  • effective community engagement.

The survey highlighted actions such as increasing the size of recycling bins, considering the expansion of service collection areas and remote collection sites, introducing green waste bins and greater community engagement and communication on managing waste.

An information session has been organised on Wednesday 12 July at the Civic Centre in Kingston from 5.30pm, where the key points of the strategy will be presented and participants will be invited to give their feedback. You can register your place for this session via eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/waste-management-information-session-tickets-35586841200

Residents can also request a hard copy of the Strategy from the Civic Centre in Kingston and can submit feedback either in writing to Kingborough Council, 15 Channel Highway, Kingston or via email to communications@kingborough.tas.gov.au.
