Event description

Description

The first 45 minutes of the beginner class is with a preparatory unit, establishing a culture of computing that is creative, personal, corroborative and reflective. Our ambition to support this type of learning culture will be evident throughout the class, we aim to cultivate a sense of confidence and fearlessness in programming. The important aspect of peer review will be introduced, with students learning how to be constructive and kind in their criticism of others work and to use mistakes as learning opportunities.

There will then be a 10-15 minute movement break, with light refreshments provided.

The remaining hour includes a mix of structured and open-ended activities that engage students in exploration of the key concept of sequence – identifying and specifying an ordered series of instructions. This is often a powerful moment for students: they’re telling the computer what to do by translating their ideas into blocks of computer code. From a step-by-step tutorial to playing with a constrained number of blocks, each activity helps learners build the skills needed experiment with sprites, costumes, looks, backdrops, and sounds and ultimately to create a personalized, interactive animation in Scratch.

This class includes:

  • Creation of a Scratch account with either the child's email or their parent's email
  • Creation of a design journal and a quick tutorial on how to use it
  • Introduction to the idea of a critique group, a small group of designers who share ideas and projects-in-progress with one another in order to get feedback and suggestions for further development.
  • Physical demonstration of the importance of sequencing an event
  • Initial exploration of the Scratch environment by creating an interactive Scratch project & basic sequence
  • Peer feedback activity using the Red, Yellow, Green reflection prompts & recording suggestions in their design journals.
  • Introduction to a wide range of Scratch blocks including blocks in the Events, Control, Sound, and Looks categories
  • Becoming familiar with the concept of sequence
  • Practicing experimenting and iterating while creating projects
  • Introduction to the computational thinking concepts of loops, events, and parallelism

Students will be able to access their Scratch account & design journal from home and continue working on their projects and many more at their leisure. Scratch is an entirely free to use software available on both Mac and Windows devices.
