All Ages Event: Patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Headlining the event is the Mal Eastick Band. Mal Eastick is widely considered to be Australia’s finest musical protagonist of the blues. Playing guitar since his mid-teens, Mal has achieved a ...standard of playing that is, at once, both envied and admired.
Mal’s early career was epitomized by his time with legendary band, Stars, and his work on the Andy Durant Memorial concert and album. In the 1980s Mal played in the Jimmy Barnes Band and also formed his own touring outfit.
With a career that is now into its fifth decade, Mal has played alongside renowned musicians such as Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry’s keyboard player), Joe Walsh (The Eagles), Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Emmanuel, Phil Manning, Ian Moss, Junior Wells, Little Charlie and & the Night Cats and Lonnie Mack. He was the guitar player in The Animal’s Eric Burdon’s 1989 Australian tour, recorded an album and toured with Broderick Smiths Big Combo, as well as tours with The Party Boys and Chain.
With his own band, Mal has supported the likes of Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Joe Louis Walker and Charlie Musselwhite. In 2014 Mal and his band competed in and made the semi –finals of The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA. The highlight of the trip saw them record at the legendary Sun Studios, following in the footsteps of Elvis and Johnny Cash.
Peter MacFarlane and The Sidewinders
The main support act for the night is Peter MacFarlane and the Sidewinders. Peter MacFarlane is not your ordinary drummer. Not only does he sing, he also occasionally bounds around the stage, provoking the audience into rowdy collaboration. Peter has learnt his skills after gallivanting around the country for over 40 years behind some of Australia’s biggest acts. His boundless energy takes you on a journey through the ages of the blues from Joe Liggins in the 40’s right up to the Joe Bonamassa in the present with some striking originals.
Joining Peter is guitarist Keith ‘Stretch’ Kerwin formally from Jon English and the Foster Brothers. Stretch has paid his dues and has worked with Doug Parkinson and Renee Geyer to name a few. He delivers explosive and expressive guitar work while backing up Peter with a rich and inviting voice leading with a few of his own favourites.
Supplying the grunt and getting all the attention is Charles Longey from Tasmania, hailed as the ‘Lord of Bass’ with his infectious groove. He just doesn’t stop.
‘Lady Mel’ Rodrigues is well renowned in the jazz and blues scene in her home state of Alberta, Canada. She brings her musical knowledge and a bit of class to the party. A great improviser on the keys and vocal harmonies Mel is the perfect foil to complement the unique sound of the Sidewinders.
