Course Description

Fast track your skills, this small group intensive course is designed for Radiologists,  DDU candidates, Emergency Clinicians ,Rural and Remote GP’s, Registrars, Medical students, Nurses and any Clinicians who have limited or no ultrasound experience with an interest in utilising ultrasound imaging in their clinical practice and would  like to become proficient  in the basic concepts of Ultrasound scanning. The format features didactic lectures, interactive scanning demonstrations and hands-on scanning tuition. The course will cover an introduction into the Physics of Ultrasound, Basic colour Doppler, Artifacts, Knobology and instrumentation, the Upper Abdomen, Male Pelvis.

The emphasis is on developing practical diagnostic scanning techniques, navigational skills and an understanding of the normal sonographic patterns and appearances, image documentation, measurements and reporting.

The small hands on group structure ensures a collaborative and supportive learning environment. High quality equipment is used in conjunction with scanning models and phantoms ensuring consolidation of practical scanning skills.


  • Physics  and Instrumentation, Artifacts and Basic colour doppler
  • Knobology, Probe orientation and manipulation techniques
  • Ultrasound Terminology and Descriptors
  • Anatomy of the Upper Abdomen including Aorta, Pancreas, Liver, Gallbladder,  CBD, Portal Vein, Kidneys and Spleen
  • Abdominal vasculature
  • Male Bladder and Prostate
  • Lectures demonstrating ultrasound appearances of common pathologies related to the relevant anatomy
  • Protocols
  • Image documentation and measurements


Upon completion of the course participants should:-

  • Have an understanding of Basic Ultrasound Physics, colour Doppler and artifacts associated with Ultrasound
  • Be able to demonstrate ultrasonically and have a detailed understanding of the gross anatomical structures and surface anatomy of the relevant organ systems of the upper abdomen, male pelvis and the anatomical relationship to surrounding organs and structures
  • Have the  techniques and scanning skills required to maximize diagnostic ability for aortic aneurysm, gall stones, fatty liver, liver metastases, obstructed biliary tree, pancreas and relevant vascular anatomy. The bladder, ureteric jets, prostate and renal hydronephrosis and size.
  • Attain proficiency in image optimization and documentation in order to enable appropriate diagnosis
  • Have an understanding of the protocols required in all aspects of examinations discussed.
  • Have an understanding of the limitations and pitfalls of ultrasound of the upper abdomen

The ASMI campus is located on the 6th Floor of the Avanti Commercial suite
building at 1 C Burdett St , Hornsby. The Avanti buildings are very close to the Hornsby Railway station and almost adjacent to the intersection of Burdett and
George streets Hornsby.
Accessing the ASMI office
The main entrance when walking to the campus is from Burdett Street.
• At the main entry there
is a security pad on the
left hand side of the
entry door.
• Enter 616 and press the
‘bell’ icon (this will ring
at the ASMI office and seminar room
allowing the doors to be
opened and allow lift

Use the lift on the right hand side and proceed to level 6.

Follow the corridor to the back. The ASMI 616 Suite is located on your right.
