About this Workshop

Buying your own home is an exciting and at the same time potentially daunting task. It is important to understand whether owning your own home is right for you.

This workshop is designed to provide you with the confidence and tools for making the big decision to buy your home and understand its impact on your lifestyle and finances.

During the workshop, you will explore your perceptions of what a home means to you, and develop an understanding of the financial aspects of buying and owning a home. We will reinforce that when you are prepared you can mitigate risks in buying a home, as well as enjoy the benefits.

On completion of the Workshop, you will have explored a range of issues to help you when making the decision to buy your own home, including:

  • Understanding your approach to home ownership and finances
  • Revisiting basic financial skills – cash flows, budgets, assets and liabilities
  • Understanding your own financial situation
  • Having an overview of the range of loans available
  • Exploring your preferences toward buying or renting
  • Understanding risks in home ownerships and how to manage them
  • Understanding the impact changes in your life could have on your finances and home ownership
  • Being aware of the home buying process and legal obligations when buying a home

What's Involved?

The workshop aims to provide you with a practical, interactive and fun approach in understanding the financial implications of owning a home and being prepared for ownership. A pre-work survey and reflective questions will need to be completed. During the workshop, a comprehensive handbook will be provided. You will be encouraged to continue with further reflection and research after the workshop – a number of activities, tools and resources will be provided to assist.
