Event description

Description

He was the man elected on a rising tide of fresh ideas and enthusiasm, but within three years in office the Kevin 07 bandwagon had come to an end after a bitter internal coup that has set an overriding theme for federal politics ever since.

La Trobe University is proud to host Kevin Rudd in Melbourne as he speaks openly for the first time on his experiences while Australian Prime Minister, as detailed in his new book The PM years.

Mr Rudd will make a key note speech on what it might take to restore public faith in Australia’s political system, particularly amongst younger voters who have deserted the mainstream political parties.

He will also conduct an In Conversation with ABC broadcaster Patricia Karvelas to dissect the story behind what really happened in Canberra, and the public and private machinations that explain the rise, fall and rise of an Australian Prime Minister

Mr Rudd will also take questions from the audience and be available for book signing immediately following the event.

Speakers:

Mr Rudd served as Australia’s 26th Prime Minister (2007-2010, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010- 2012). He led Australia’s response during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) – the only major developed economy not to go into recession – and helped found the G20. As a Senior Fellow with Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, he undertook a major research project on US China Relations. Mr Rudd is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Chatham House. He is a Distinguished Statesman with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and has been appointed to the Concordia Leadership Council. Mr Rudd is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University. He co-authored a report of the UN Secretary General's High Level Panel on Global Sustainability and chairs the WEF's Global Agenda Council on Fragile States. He is the President of The Asia Society Policy Unit based in New York City.

Patricia Karvelas is a prominent and highly respected Australian journalist, beginning her professional career at the ABC and SBS 20 years ago. She currently presents RN's flagship radio current affairs program RN Drive—a role she took up in January 2015. In 2018 Patricia will also host a national affairs television program on the ABC News 24 channel, Sunday evenings at 9:15pm featuring in depth interviews with a range of influential Australians.

Patricia co hosts the ABC’s popular weekly political podcast — The Party Room. She previously hosted and produced the program Karvelas on Sky News — a program which focused on federal politics and policy. Patricia has been a regular fill-in presenter on 774 ABC Melbourne and frequently appears on a range of television and radio programs across the ABC. She is also a regular op-ed writer for The Australian and the ABC.
