Description

This full day introductory navigation walk gives participants the opportunity to discover basic navigational skills, on Queensland’s most impressive peak.

Mt Barney National Park is only 90 minutes from Brisbane and is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage property. Immerse yourself in the surrounding bush, climb Paddies Peak, and see native wildlife, wildflowers and impressive views. Explore the stunning area in a small group setting and get your first taste of how people use maps and navigate in the bush.

Inclusions

  • All first aid equipment

  • National Park fees

Exclusions:

Food, personal equipment, compass, transport


Itinerary:

  • Meet at Mount Barney Lodge at 8am. (we can work with you to organise car pooling)

  • Intro to hiking, the surrounding area, safety and basics of navigation in the bush

  • Hike through bushland, paddies and up the peak

  • Stop for lunch (BYO)

  • Continue hiking, touching on map navigation

  • Arrive back at Mount Barney Lodge at 4pm


Recommended gear:

To wear:

  • Long walking shorts, leggings or hiking pants or yoga pants

  • Tshirt or long sleeved shirt

  • Comfortable hiking shoes (boots are not always necessary in QLD)

  • Hat

  • Sunglasses

To carry:

Hiking backpack to carry the following:

  • Personal compass (Mt Barney Lodge sells the Silva Expedition 54, which is the recommended product. If you want to purchase be sure to shop around for the best price.)

  • Pens, pencil and notebook

  • A plastic map case is recommended but not essential to protect your maps, a large zip-lock plastic bag will do

  • A completed medical information form (given to you once you sign up)

  • Lunch and snacks for the day

  • Sunscreen

  • 3 Litre water bottle, filled with water (minimum)

  • Wet weather gear including breathable sturdy raincoat (Gortex or other)

  • Head torch + spare batteries

  • Fleece jumper or jacket

  • Personal medication

  • Insect repellent

  • Bag liner for keeping your warm clothes dry
