Kaospilot – 25 Years of Design, Creative Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation Made in Denmark

Abstract

Social innovation and creative entrepreneurship are hot topics. Yet, ideas and themes that led to these concepts can easily be traced back to the 1960s and even earlier. Today, they have emerged from their niche existence at the fringe of entrepreneurship and are very much being sought after by governments, industry, and civil society. Seen both as a new economic growth engine as well as a broader means to create social value, they have found their way into higher education and the creative tech start-up sector as well.

The Kaospilot business and design school has been at the forefront to help people carve out a future as creative entrepreneurs and social innovators for more than 25 years – placing emphasis on personal motivation, strengths and relationships as well as supporting a critical debate around democracy, participation, and engagement in society.

This talk will offer cases to illuminate three points. First, how people can be trained to become entrepreneurs and leaders in a different way than offered by most other higher education institutions. Second, how these cases have gone about solving real world problems in their endeavours. Third, insights into how social innovation also affects more traditional commercial strategies and particular challenges in Scandinavian welfare states are discussed, too.

Kaospilot is a hybrid business and design school in Aarhus, Denmark, guided by a polymath approach to leadership and entrepreneurship – with a special aim towards social innovation. Our teaching programmes are not designed simply to shape students to fit the future, but to help them create it. Started in 1991, Kaospilot has been on the forefront of educational reform generating action, empathy and engagement. BusinessWeek has recognised Kaospilot as one of the best design schools in the world, and Fast Company has named it in its Startup Leagues Big 10, preparing you for the fast moving startup economy. Today, it consists of a three year program, a number of professional programs and a number of other entities that together create a new type of school for design and entrepreneurship.
