About Just Listening Community
Just Listening Community (JLC), is a project delivered in partnership by Community Health Onkaparinga, and Humane Clinic. It will provide a safe, therapeutic environment to offer connection and support to people in distress. The concept has been introduced successfully in the UK where it has been shown to provide a valued therapeutic environment for mental health consumers, promoting independence and recovery in the community. It is a professional-led, volunteer-based service designed to meet the needs of people in the community who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health and wellbeing.
A purpose designed and developed facility in Christie’s Beach will open in May 2021, eventually providing support for people experiencing distress, crisis & suicide. It is intended to help people sooner and be more cost effective than current alternatives. It will provide a service enabling clients to potentially avoid hospital Emergency Departments and mental health wards, both of which can be intimidating environments and can often exacerbate mental health symptoms.
It will be available throughout the day so that the community can offer connection and compassion to people in need:
• As often as they need
• Before taking a drug
• Before taking action towards ending their life
The community volunteers will attend training over six sessions (held over six weeks) in the practices and principles of Just Listening including , Emotional CPR, Power Threat Meaning Framework and Dissociachotic, the model used to support people seeking help through JLC. This training will be facilitated by the Humane Clinic, which has significant expertise and experience in successfully conducting workshops and training in the mental health field. The training structure provided is similar to that offered by the Samaritans in the UK.
