The 2020 Joining the Dots summit will explore the pathways, challenges and emerging innovations in Palliative Care in WA.

About this Event

Joining the Dots is the theme of the 2020 Palliative Care Summit for Western Australia.

Bringing together palliative care, aged care and community care professionals, researchers, volunteers, policy makers, students, carers and community members this summit outcomes are as follows:

  • Sharing evidence and experience from varied sources to inform quality palliative caring in WA;
  • Promoting WA examples of innovation and best practice in the delivery of quality palliative caring;
  • Providing an update on the palliative and aged care landscapes with reference to significant Federal and State Government processes and community initiatives;
  • Sharing both the opportunities and challenges resulting from COVID-19 in relation to quality palliative caring;
  • Recognising the critical role of carers and community, including the compassionate community approach, in the delivery of quality palliative caring.

Program

We are pleased to announce this FREE summit will be formally opened by the Hon. Roger Cook, Deputy Premier; Minister for Health; Mental Health. We can also confirm the following speakers have agreed to participate in the summit:

  • Dr Christian Ntizimira, City Manager for the City Cancer Challenge Foundation and past Executive Secretary of the Rwanda Palliative Care and Hospice Organisation
  • Professor Susan Kurrle, Clinical Network Director for Rehabilitation and Aged Care in Sydney and medical advisor to the ABC documentary series Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds
  • Professor Samar Aoun, Professor of Palliative Care in the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University and Chair of the South West Compassionate Communities Network
  • Sarah Cowie, Director of the Health and Disabilities Services Complaints Office
  • Dr Alison Parr, Director of Medical Services for St John of God Murdoch Hospital and Palliative Care Clinical Lead at WACPCN.

Attendance options

We are committed to making Joining the Dots as inclusive as possible no matter where in WA you are located or what your circumstances may be. We are therefore offering two attendance options/types of tickets - in person and online via Zoom.

Thanks to funding from WA Health, Joining the Dots is FREE to attend.

Emerging Innovations EOI

The summit will include a section dedicated to sharing a diverse range of emerging innovations related to palliative care from around WA. Expressions of interest are currently being sought from community organisations; health and aged care providers; and carer, consumer and volunteer groups interested in presenting their emerging innovation in a maximum 10 minute time slot. The closing date for EOIs is 30 October. More information on the EOI process is on the Palliative Care WA website.
