Event description

Description

The Albany John Calvin School is very excited to be hosting the 2018 John Calvin Schools Conference. The conference will be addressing the important topic of Reformed School Culture. This event will be held in the Albany Entertainment Centre with all Keynote speeches taking place in the main Theatre. Parents and association members are a vital part of our school community, so we heartily welcome them to our John Calvin Schools Conference and would love to have them join us for the keynote speeches. Mr John Jagersma, Mr Alwyn Terpstra and Mrs Kristen Alkema will be addressing the audience on different aspects of school culture. The conference will also be offering some entertainment with a “School Talent” show. We look forward to seeing you there!

Conference Theme and Keynote Addresses
What does it mean to build a Reformed School culture? For that matter, what is a Reformed School culture? And, what can I do to help build a Reformed School culture? These questions, related to the theme of our conference, point to both the personal and complex nature of school culture. We’ve all experience
d school culture, yet our individual responses to this may not be the same. Hence, this conference has scheduled three different keynote addresses related to the theme.

Keynote Address #1 - Building a Reformed School Culture (Mr. John Jagersma)
Living in Canada, and thereby somewhat removed from the Australian school culture, Mr Jagersma is well-placed to address the conference theme from a broader perspective. He will be able to speak freely, without any direct implications for a particular school’s culture. Having served as a teacher and principal within the Canadian John Calvin School system, this address will be personal and grounded in the Bible.

Keynote Address #2 - Life in the (Reformed School) Bubble - (Mr. Alwyn Terpstra) During this address, Mr Terpstra will introduce the results of a school culture survey. Hence, his address will be very practical and with immediate reference to our Australian John Calvin Schools culture. It considers the “here and now” in terms of the school culture opinions present within our school community. Having been part of our school system for many years on all sides of the country, Mr Terpstra is well placed to provide further insight into the perceptions of John Calvin School culture.

Keynote Address #3 and Panel Discussion—( Mr. John Jagersma)

Keynote Address #4 - School Culture and the Comparision Trap (Mrs Kristen Alkema)

We live in a world that regularly compares people and things. Making comparisons is, in some respect, a part of everyday school life. Yet how does making comparisons impact on school culture? Having previously addressed the topic of comparisons during an Albany Ladies Fellowship Day and more recently at the National Free Reformed Youth Convention, Mrs Alkema will now tackle this topic from an educational perspective. Her address will include observations gained via one-on-one discussions with teachers currently working in our schools.

School Talent Show

Enjoy an evening of light-hearted fun with every John Calvin School displaying their talent for 15min. We look forward to enjoying the talent of 7 different schools.
