A new freshly roasted program at The Dock!

Jazz Brew Cafe

Brewing up some groovy jazz tunes on the second Friday afternoon of each month.  Linger longer after work or lounge with friends at your favourite meeting point at The Dock in the cafe.

Freshly brewed:   MONIQUE DIMATTINA

Singer/songwriter, boogie-woogie barrelhouse basher, composer of crystalline piano miniatures, radio personality and in-demand session pianist, Monique diMattina’s cred as a mature and versatile artist is well deserved.

Monique’s new album ‘Nola’s Ark’ was recorded in New Orleans at the famed Piety Studios with an all-star line-up of musicians featured in HBO’s ‘Treme’ series, including trumpeter Leroy Jones (Harry Connick Jnr band) and bass/sousaphone man Matt Perrine (Dr John, Jon Cleary). The album features original songs written on Monique’s 3RRR segment ‘Shaken Not Rehearsed’ alongside well loved standards such as ‘Young at Heart’ and Fats Waller’s ‘Numb Fumblin’.

In 2000 diMattina received prestigious Fulbright and Queens Trust awards for Masters study in New York City. Over four years in NYC Monique worked with Lou Reed, Bjork, Jimmy Cobb and the bands of Peter Gabriel, Suzanne Vega and Norah Jones, and recorded her 1st album ‘Live at the 55’ at the iconic 55 Bar in Greenwich Village. She completed her Masters thesis on Miles Davis pianist Wynton Kelly, played recitals for dignitaries including Bill Clinton and Vaclav Havel, ran the New York Marathon, maintained an addiction to Gus’s Dill Pickles and participated in wild Obama victory celebrations..

Following her return to Melbourne in 2009 Monique released three albums on the JazzHead label – two exquisite solo piano collections Senses and Sun Signs (“Calm notes with a sharp intelligence, this luscious soundscape is the thinking person’s zen escape.” – Readings 2011) and the acclaimed rootsy jazz-pop inflected ‘Welcome Stranger’ – “..a pure Melbourne album in so many ways..about us and from the place we live” .. (Chris Johnston, The Age) featuring the bluesy “Livingest Place” (“the nicest and slyest Melbourne vs Sydney song ever” – Doug Spencer, ABC RN).

Monique appears weekly on Tim Thorpe’s 3 RRR program Vital Bits for her ‘Shaken Not Rehearsed’ segment, in which she writes and performs a song within an hour, according to listener’s requests.

She performs regularly with Clare Bowditch, The Melbourne Tango Quintet and Doug de Vries, she teaches piano and song-writing at VCAM (UniMelb) and her music features regularly on ABC, BBC London and local radio.

“Jazz smarts sculpt elegant pop” – ABC Limelight

“Sophisticated and playful” – Dave Graney, 3RRR
