Event description
Temari Balls are highly valued and cherished gifts, symbolizing deep friendship and loyalty.

About this Event

The ancient art of Temari ball making dates back to the 16th century. Originally given as gifts symbolising deep friendship and loyalty. Parents’ would also gift their child a ball with a positive wish for them contained within the layers.

We will make our Temari ball from scratch in the traditional method so we can also hide a wish or positive affirmation. Participants will learn how do shape, wrap and section the ball ready for embroidery. Then the transformation begins, as we stitch using brightly coloured threads layer upon layer to create the striking traditional geometric design.

Robyn has spent a lifetime of creating with her hands. Whilst self taught in the art of basketry she is formally trained in the soft furnishing industry. She was a regular creative contributor to the “women’s weekly handmade” magazine, providing content and written instructions and has run a variety of workshops and creative enrichment programs. Robyn finds the meditative act of foraging fibres for weaving and creating a functional item rewarding and humbling. She is an avid sewer and loves the geometry, form and vibrant colours of the Japanese temari ball.

All materials will be provided.
