Thursday Night Class - 2018


Thursday Class has Structured frame

This is a set course to provide beginners with a hands-on introduction to Japanese joinery. This course is also designed to get wider basics of general woodworking by joining through out the year. Experienced students are also welcome to get hands-on knowledge on Japanese tools or joinery.


Term 1 Japanese tools

8 Feb – 12 Apr

Tuesday nights x 10 weeks, 10 x 3 hour sessions


For serious beginners, intermediate serious Japanese tool lovers.

Course will introduce some Japanese hand tools and the importance of keeping blades sharp.


Content

1. Learning about setting Japanese Chisels, including Japanese waterstone sharpenning.

2. Learning about Japanese Plane .


Plan A or B?


Plan-A. Making Japanese Plane block. (48mm single blade plane with brass mouth fitting)

More chisel work. Difficult but satisfying making your own. Cheaper plan.

What you can gain

3. Chisel skills by making plane block, using your perfectly set chisel.

4. Detailed knowledge about Japanese plane by making your own block.

Day 1: Setting chisel hoop

Day 2: Lapping the back / Sharpening

Day 3: Plane blade sharpening / truing water stone

Day 4: Plane blade sharpening / Selecting timber

Day 5: Marking and roughing out

Day 6: Roughing out

Day 7: Fitting blade

Day 8: Fitting brass mouse

Day 9: Tuning the sole / final finish

Day 10: Finishing / Thin shaving competition


Plan-B. Learn how to set up Japanese plane(Shikomi), and make a box out of your plane.

More plane work. More cost involved.

*Tool Purchase

It is recommended to buy your own tools to learn about tuning your tools from scratch. We will learn about plane and chisels thorough tuning themselves, and use it to make a project.

KOITOYA can supply the tools from Inoue Hamono (Tokyo). Traditional style Tool shop. Tools are professional grade but are not so expensive, just made by anonymous blacksmith.

You can also bring your own or tools purchased second hand – buying new tools is optional. Contact me if you want to discuss with me.

Long Term Students Discount - by attending more than 3 terms.

Yearly Pass available.


Flexible plan possible. ~What if you missed the class or going on holiday?~

You can take an alternative night on Tuesday or Thursday to catch up your missing day. (Early bird fee is not refundable.)

You can also pay $80 per each night instead of paying discounted early bird fee. (Email Hiroshi to book your space.)


Optional opportunity: Saturday Machine Safety Workshop (9:30-15:30), $150 ($130 for current students)

Limited to current students only, you can get extra lectures about machine safety and usage.

This is optional. The fee will be charged on the door on the day.
