Event description

Description

Dear Family of the John XXIII College Community,

The John XXIII College Residents’ Association is pleased to announce that tickets to the 2018 Parents Weekend are now available online for purchase.

We are excited to announce a few changes to our annual ‘Parents Weekend’. We have decided to rebrand ‘Family Weekend’ to encourage the attendance of siblings or grandparents when parents might not always be available to attend. This letter explains, the programme of events and various alterations we have made in response to the fantastic feedback families provided us last year.

Family Weekend Programme of Events

The weekend is a showcase of Residential life here at John XXIII College and is designed to give family members an insight into the social, sporting and spiritual opportunities that make our community the vibrant and exciting place that it is! Family Weekend is a highlight of our calendar, representing a chance for parents, grandparents and siblings to get to know their children’s friends and family and to experience, however briefly, the true and effervescent spirit of the John XXIII College community.

This year will see the event held over the weekend of Friday the 31st August – Sunday the 2nd September. You are all invited by purchasing tickets to watch the College Dramatic Society’s annual play, directed by former resident Tyrone Clarke. A wonderful production which sees two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing "Scenes from Shakespeare" on the Moose (not that one) Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash! Existential questioning ensues, romantic entanglements abound and greed over love flourishes in the name of Aunt Florence's fortune. After all, who ever said that money can't buy love?

As alluded to above, after the 2017 event families provided feedback which we have listened to and so this year, we have decided to do a few things differently! We have made the decision to move the annual ‘Cocktail Evening’ to College grounds. We believe that the change in atmosphere will result in a more natural and free flowing movement of family and Residents, giving the event a more exciting atmosphere. There will be food trucks, drinks, live music, dancing and a variety of garden games all included in your ticket to create a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We are also using this opportunity to showcase the musical talents of many of our Residents as they perform throughout the night.

There is the opportunity to join us for a few casual afternoon drinks at The Ruc in Turner on Saturday 1st September from 4.00pm prior to the Cocktail Evening to ease you into a night of mingling. As always, the College will be hosting a brunch which you can also elect to purchase a ticket to attend on the Sunday morning.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself, Alex or Tanae.

We hope that you are now excited as we are for the 2018 J23 Family Weekend.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 Family Weekend.
