For the past 18 months, a revolutionary new product, ‘bakslap’ has been in development on the Sunshine Coast to help reduce and prevent melanoma and is set to hit the Australian market this summer. The product allows you to apply sunscreen and lotions to your back and hard to reach places on your body without the messy hands.
Queensland has THE highest rate of melanoma cancer in the world, we reckon it makes sense that we start this journey here. Come and join us as we launch our national roll-out and Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in getting the 'bakslap' to a store near you and to help kick cancer to the curb.
We invite you to pledge your support on the day in return for some legendary rewards and pre-orders for your very own ‘bakslap’. Help us celebrate the ‘bakslap’ journey with the local surfing community, high profile surf lifesaving identities, business leaders and media. You’ll hear from the founder Raphael McGowan on his moving story behind creating the product as well as some special guest speakers. We’re also honoured to have local musician Andrea Kirwin performing a special original song she created with us dedicated to the ‘bakslap’ journey.

$1.00 for every ‘bakslap’ sale goes to Melanoma Institute Australia
As well as protecting ourselves, it’s vital to find a cure for this disease. So, after a long history together, we’re proud to be supporting Melanoma Institute Australia and with your help at this event when ‘bakslap’ hits the market, for every purchase we’ll donate $1 to support the organisation’s dedication to finding a cure.
About the founder Raphael McGowan
“G’day, I’m Raph, a keen surfer and lover of the great outdoors. Having lost my beautiful sister Tess McGowan-Chan to melanoma aged just 31, I understand all too well the risks of sun exposure in our harsh Aussie climate.
Tess’s legacy and the mission of all the team behind bakslap, is to make sure no one else has to endure such pain and to help prevent and reduce the rates of melanoma in Australia.
Before Tess was diagnosed I’d just finished studying a Bachelor of Business at the University of the Sunshine Coast and was cycling across the USA for a charity initiative. When I received news my sister Tess was diagnosed with melanoma. I came home to be with her as soon as I could, along with my family who all rallied to be with her at all times. Tess passed away 11 months later leaving behind her husband, young baby and close-knit family.
Losing Tess motivated me to develop the ‘bakslap’ applicator, which allows you to apply sunscreen and lotions to those hard to reach places like your back, and your body without the messy hands.
