Information Security Start-Ups



The speaker and all panallists represent Australian cyber security start-ups.

  • Kirstin McIntosh, Head of Corporate Partnerships, CyRise, will give an overview of the Melbourne cyber security start-up environment.
  • Ken Brand will moderate a panel discussion.
    • The panel members will include:
      • Priya George, CEO and Security Evangelist, NIMIS Cybersecurity
      • Dr Omaru Maruatona, Founder, AiCULUS
      • Jeff Paine, CEO and Founder, ResponSight 
      • Dr Vaughan Shanks, Founder - CYDARM Technologies
    • The panellists will discuss:
      • The technology of their startup's product/service;
      • How their business started, has grown, and plans to grow (competition, challenges, funding, sales, profits, staffing, etc.); and
      • What they might be looking for from the audience (investment, employees, sales leads/introductions, etc.).


Speaker and Panel Member Bios and Company Background

Kirstin McIntosh (speaker)  

Kirstin McIntosh is the Head of Corporate Partnerships for CyRise, Australia’s cyber security venture accelerator, here in Melbourne. Prior to entering the Australian startup space, Kirstin spent 23 years working in Europe and Asia in business development and corporate partnership roles. Kirstin is a mentor in the Tech Girls Movement, and part of the #TechDiversity Awards team. She has an MBA from IMD Switzerland and a B.Comm from the University of Melbourne.

About CyRise

CyRise is Australia’s cyber security venture accelerator. A partnership between Dimension Data and Deakin University which grew out of their desire to strengthen the Australian cyber security ecosystem, CyRise’s takes Australia’s best cyber security founders through a six month, mentor-driven program to gain the entrepreneurship skills, networks and investment to become high-value, high-growth global companies. CyRise has just finished with its first cohort of startups, with a new cohort to start later this year.   

Ken Brandt (CISSP-ISSMP) independent director, mgmt. consultant (panel moderator)

Ken has over 30 years of international management, information security, technology, risk and project management experience, largely in the financial services, critical infrastructure, and government sectors; plus he has been leading, advising, or being an independent director (with a focus on strategy and growth) of small-medium sized enterprises. He has provided cyber security expert testimony to financial regulators, written information security best practices, presented speeches at industry forums, and given guest lectures on management, information security, and risk at Deakin and RMIT universities. Ken has held senior information security risk management positions with ANZ and EY. Prior to that he was based in the United States, where he was the president of two Wall Street information technology/security consultancies, director of a brokerage system consultancy, head of information systems for a brokerage / wealth management firm, and a senior manager with Price Waterhouse.

Priya George, CEO & Co-founder, NIMIS Cybersecurity (panel member)

Priya is CEO of NIMIS Cybersecurity, a Techstars backed company. Her team has delivered security services to Australian and US intelligence agencies, NAB, ANZ bank, BAE Systems and technology companies. Prior to NIMIS, Priya was the CEO of Necessary Security & National Cybersecurity Institute a security consulting company focused on security architecture, and evaluating emerging cybersecurity technology products. Priya spent the first 13 years of her career leading significant transformation projects in technology, organisational restructure, and people engagement – mining, energy, water, financial services, technology and government. Priya also co-founded an analytics and video software company that came out of two years of technology R&D as part of a motorsport business. She has a passion for cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, technology, classic cars, good food, and the beach.

About NIMIS Cybersecurity

Jonathan Horne, Founder and CEO, Defend Wise (panel member)

Jonathan Horne has founded, sold and invested in a wide range of technology companies spanning domain names, web hosting, live chat operations, enterprise automation and most recently cyber security. His unique skill-set of one part developer, one part business networker has empowered his businesses to both fix real problems and scale to all parts of the world. A research trip to Black Hat in 2016 sparked an interest in cyber security and he has spent the last 18 months investigating and building solutions to fill what he sees as the biggest gaps in the cyber security market.

Omaru Marautona, Founder, Aiculus (panel member)

Omaru Maruatona is a Cyber security and Machine Learning expert with deep industry and research experience. In his PhD project, Omaru worked with a big Australian bank to develop Machine Learning based fraud detection algorithms. He has also worked for a global financial services company as a Security Analyst and has consulted for PwC Australia in Cyber security architecture and strategy.  Omaru is a recognised thought leader in the application of AI and smart cities and has published and spoken at various organisations and conferences in Australia. 

About Aiculus

Aiculus is a global Cyber-AI company that specialises in digital defence and secure business optimisation solutions.  One of Aiculus' key products is the API security and visbility solution. This is a specific API risk management solution that provides real-time API threat defence and API visibility on an organisation's external APIs. Leveraging Machine Learning and advanced Behavourial Analytics, the API security solution provides organisations the capability to stop high risk API calls and indepth risk analysis on each API transaction. 

Jeff Paine, CEO, ResponSight (panel member)

Jeff Paine is CEO and Founder of ResponSight. Jeff has a long history in IT, cyber security and software development. He has worked with some of Australia’s top organisations as a virtual Chief Security Officer, advising executives and boards on security strategy, capability development and integration, and improving cyber security awareness. Jeff previously held the role of Director of Cyber with PwC and Managing Principal Security Consultant at Dimension Data, where he provided technical security and governance, risk and compliance services to large enterprise, financial services and government customers.

About ResponSight

Founded in 2015, ResponSight is an Australian data science company that offers behavioural analytics software to monitor desktop, laptop and server use, identify abnormal user behaviour and detect real-time enterprise risk. It offers customers an early warning risk intelligence and business decision-making tool. Using data science and an innovative approach unlike any other, ResponSight aims to provide actionable risk insights and intelligence that complements existing technologies and supports board/executive strategic decision making.

Dr. Vaughan Shanks, Founder and CEO, CYDARM Technologies (panel member)

Prior to founding CYDARM, Vaughan worked for 4 years at Palantir Technologies, the world’s leading data analytics vendor, as a deployment lead and forward deployed engineer. Previously, Vaughan worked for almost a decade at the Department of Defence, as a team lead, DevOps lead, and advocate for analytic modernisation, including three years as an integrated officer in the USA. Vaughan holds a PhD in Computer Science, in the field of Machine Learning.


CYDARM is making cybersecurity operations more effective and efficient, through the use a platform that supports the workflows of distributed teams. CYDARM protects sensitive data while supporting collaboration across the security operations centre and beyond. An intuitive user experience, including visualisation and reporting tools, enables situational awareness across distributed teams and up to senior decision-makers. Potential threats are prioritised and enriched with context using orchestration and machine learning.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable, can I order multiple tickets and what if I need to cancel?

One ticket per individual, with no transferring of tickets, makes it much more likely that building security will let you into the event and that everyone’s continuing education credits will be recorded correctly. If you register but will not be able to make the meeting, please log into Eventbrite and cancel your booking. The space can then be freed up for another person, such as your delegate.
