Description
Is there such a thing as substance-related IPA perpetration? Substance use is strongly and consistently associated with intimate partner abuse (IPA) perpetration in the general population and clinical samples. Despite this, the role of substance use in IPA perpetration is not well understood. Current debates and evidence explaining the higher prevalence of IPA perpetration by substance users will be discussed. To answer the question ‘Is there such a thing as substance-related IPA perpetration?’ a recent review of qualitative studies to explore how substance use features and differs in female survivors’ and male perpetrators’ accounts of IPA perpetration will be presented alongside qualitative dyad interviews from male IPA perpetrators receiving substance use treatment in England and their current or ex-female partners. [research from the 'Advancing theory and treatment approaches for males in substance use treatment who perpetrate intimate partner violence' research programme (NIHR PGfAR RP-PG-1214-20009)]
A panel discussion will follow facilitated by Kelsey Hegarty and include Stefan Gruenert, Angela Taft and Gail Gilchrist.
