Description

IPCC special report on Global Warming of 1.5°C: Deciphering the implications for emission-reduction and climate adaptation

The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement committed participants to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.

On 8th October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will publish a report outlining possible pathways to meet these targets, their feasibility, costs and the benefits of limiting global warming to 1.5°C vs 2°C.

Prof Mark Howden has been involved in the planning and delivery of this report from the start as a Vice Chair of IPCC Working Group 2 and as a Review Editor. He has been a major contributor to IPCC Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Assessment reports as well as various IPCC Special Reports and the IPCC greenhouse gas inventory methods.

Mark will discuss the findings of the report, including the global implications of a 1.5°C rise compared with a 2°C rise and pathways to meeting these targets. He'll also outline impacts on human health, the Australian and regional economies and the global environment.

The event will be introduced by Jo Evans, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Environment and Energy (DoEE) and she will also moderate a Q&A session with the audience. The DoEE provides travel support for Australian researchers to participate in the IPCC process and represents Australia at IPCC Plenary meetings.
