Event description
How we garden can be critical for the little creatures and all other life.

About this Event

Our human impact is decimating the creatures with whom we share the planet, but, while we may feel powerless to change this global trend, we are not. Starting in our own gardens, we can make a difference, as shown by Helen’s 33-year-old butterfly and wildlife garden in West End.

Most animal species, by far, are insects, and they play key roles in the web of life, including converting plants into food for other creatures. Way fewer than 1% cause our food plants any problems. Native insects depend on specific native plants to feed their larvae but most plants in our gardens are not native. If we grow more native host plants for insects, we will be amazed by how many come back into our gardens and neighbourhoods. They will delight us and they will strengthen local webs of life and help protect our plants from the very few insects that can damage them. An added bonus is that we can also eat some of these plants.

Our book, Inviting Nature to Dinner, was published in October 2020. This workshop will explore the information and gardening strategies presented in the book and how we can make a difference in our local spaces and places.
