Event description

Description

The afternoon will begin with an address by Professor sj Miller, leading trans*+ scholar and Deputy Director for the Center for Research and Equity and Faculty member of New York University's Steinhardt School of Education. sj's talk, "Trans*+ing Education" will explore how trans*+ is a neomediator for literacy learning and (un)learning across policies, practices and beliefs. The address will focus on how the many uses of trans*+ can be embedded in classroom curriculum, pedagogy, and policy and how its spatialisation can disrupt oppressive narratives while simultaneously reshaping, reframing, and recognizing identity expansiveness in and across different contexts. A hope for this work is that such shifts lead to (a)gender identity self-determination and justice.

sj will be joined by an invited panel of educators, researchers and advocates from across the education and health sectors, including:

  • A/P Tania Ferfolja, Director of Professional Experience at WSU's School of Education
  • Mel Smith, Union Training Officer from the NSW Teachers Federation
  • Eloise Brook, Transgender Advocate and associate of the Gender Centre

Please join us for this important event! Light refreshments provided.
