Introduction to Writing Workshop F-7

(Bookmaking & Writer's Notebook)

Mini Course

Facilitated by Katie Ashmead and Amanda Bartram

This new model combines the existing Introduction to Bookmaking & Introduction to Writer's Notebook Mini courses. Katie and Amanda will introduce the philosophy behind Writing Workshop in Primary School settings. It will include introductions to "Making Books" and "Writer's Notebooks" as two 'containers' for writing within the Writing Workshop.

This is an ideal workshop for teams to participate in together.

Part of the day will be together and then Early Years teacher will work with Katie about getting started with Bookmaking and the M-UP teachers will work with Amanda about getting started with Writer's Notebooks.

Being a writer is more than knowing how to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. Understanding how to craft effective writing to convey an intended message involves complex composing decisions alongside knowledge of language conventions. Strong writers think about their audience, the purpose for writing and select the most appropriate crafting techniques for their needs. They learn to think like a writer: collecting ideas for writing, thinking about word choice, sentence fluency, structure and how to bring authentic voice to their writing.

Can you imagine signing up for a class to learn piano from a teacher who does not actually play piano? This workshop will place particular emphasis on the importance of teachers writing themselves. Getting inside the head of a writer empowers teachers to make the thinking of a writer visible for the children they teach. Engaging in writing with and for your children is the most powerful tool a teacher of writing can have.

Katie Ashmead and Amanda Bartram

Katie began her career in England and has been working in Adelaide for over 12 years.  She is experienced with a diverse range of skills.  Having implemented Writers Workshop with a bookmaking focus for Reception (Foundation) to year 3 children over a number of years she is passionate about creating opportunities for playful and powerful learning for children in their first years of school. In partnership with Marilyn Hayward, she has facilitated the Introduction to Bookmaking mini courses for Lisa Burman Consultants since 2014. These focus on the Bookmaking pedagogy with three to eight year olds.

For the last two years Katie has facilitated the Bookmaking Inquiry group and has coached teachers on implementing book making into their sites.  She has also welcomed many educators into her Writing Workshops so they can observe and feel the power of this pedagogy first-hand.

Katie is understanding of the challenges teachers face both as newly qualified and long term teachers and believes that every child matters. Katie facilitates professional learning in Writers Workshop, Reading Workshop and leads teachers in professional dialogue.

Amanda is a passionate and innovative early years educator, who has recently embraced the ‘wonderful messiness’ of consultancy work with Lisa Burman Consultants. In her previous role at Blair Athol North B-7 School, Amanda developed a model of ‘doing school differently’ with a group of children in years 2 to 7 in the Red 5 Studio project. In this project, educators listened and responded to children in authentic ways; providing possibilities for engagement, increased wellbeing, a sense of community connectedness and a deep commitment to personalised learning – including children planning their own learning every day!

Amanda lives her belief that children are competent and capable – a view which underpins her daily work with children, their families and other educators.

Amanda facilitates professional learning in areas such as: Engaging Learning Environments, Bookmaking & Writer’s Notebooks, Nature Play, Loose Parts & Blocks; and Making & Tinkering.
