Event description
Come and learn about permaculture and how it can help you to design a thriving and resilient garden and lifestyle!

About this Event

This workshop will cover the basics of permaculture and show you how to analyse and plan a site, like your own home and garden, looking at all of its possibilities and understanding how natural forces shape it.

We will explore the ethics and the main permaculture design principles that help you to work with nature, not against it. While permaculture is often thought of as a gardening or agricultural approach, the principles can also be applied to many other facets of everyday life and so are helpful decision-making tools in all sorts of ways.

Follow the theory with a garden tour that demonstrates the practical implementation of many of the key principles - see how many you can spot!

Learning outcomes:

  • An appreciation of the background and underpinning ethics of permaculture
  • An initial understanding of the 12 key design principles, using practical examples of how they can be applied.
  • A preliminary understanding of key permaculture techniques, including plant guilds, food forests and passive water harvesting.
  • Ability to conduct a zone analysis on your own property
  • Ability to conduct a site and sector analysis of your own property
  • Ability to make a basic permaculture plan for your property

This workshop is presented over two consecutive Sundays:

  • Sunday 27 October: 10:00am to 4.00pm. Venue: Canberra City Farm
  • Sunday 3rd November : 10.00am to 4.00pm Venue: Residential address in Canberra (address will be provided when you book).

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included for both days. We will have vegetarian and vegan options available. Please advise if you have other specific dietary requirements and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Please note: this workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

About your teacher: Dr Cally Brennan

Cally has been practising permaculture for nearly 10 years. She is currently a Director on the Board of Permaculture Australia and runs Canberra Permaculture Design and Education, a permaculture-focused garden design business in Canberra. She has qualifications in permaculture and advanced permaculture design and hosts workshops on permaculture and sustainable garden topics. She and her partner are converting their suburban garden in Cook into a permaculture food garden and are pleased to report they have already harvested over 300kg of home grown produce in 2019 alone!
