Event description
Over four Saturdays learn to turn your ideas into screen prints.

About this Event

Over four Saturdays the tutor provides guided exercises and demonstrations to inspire you to explore how your hand drawn, digital images and found source materials can be incorporated into your own original printed artwork, poster, or functional item like cards. You will consider size, colours and layers in your own design, make hand cut stencils and photo emulsions stencils, learn registration methods, and produce an edition of prints.

Bring some lunch or pop up to the nearby cafes and shops. We have basic kitchen facilities. Be prepared to get messy and don’t dress in your best gear (wear closed-in shoes for safety). Water-based inks are used. All materials are supplied. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Printing will be on paper, not fabric. Chemicals and a high pressure hose will be used. Personal protection equipment is provided. Please read the course outline -there is homework! Digital editing is not included in the course, however the tutor will do their best to assist you with any image tweaking.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Day 1:- Familiarisation of material and equipment, demo of printing 2 layers, hand cut a stencil in a guided exercise and use the stencil to print the background layer of your edition of prints. Coat a screen with photo emulsion for next week. Homework: create an image on a transparency to go over your backgrounds.

Day 2: - Expose the screen you coated from day 1 with the transparency you made for homework. Use the exposed screen to print a second layer over your backgrounds. Remove the emulsion from the screen. Design a 2 layer image yourself, considering size, colours and stencils. This can be hand drawn, digital, or repurposed visual material. Coat a screen for next week if required. Homework: prepare stencils for your design.

Day 3: - Expose emulsion stencil if required, print your 2 layer design as a small edition of prints. Look at examples of monotype screen prints. Homework: find a simple image (not much bigger than A4) to trace onto the screen for your monotype print.

Day 4: - Remove emulsion stencils from last week, demo of monotype printing, create a monotype print (unique print). Demo of a blended colour pull, do a blended colour pull using your hand cut stencil from day 1.
