An introductory course for QGIS.

Dates: Monday 13th - Tuesday 14th November 2017

Prerequisites: Familiarity with programming concepts (in any language) is assumed.

Overview: By the end of the course, you will have all the knowledge you need to start working competently with QGIS for analyzing and processing geospatial data and producing publication-quality maps.

Format: The course is a mixture of hands-on exercises and instruction from experts. Places are strictly limited to ensure there is plenty of hands-on help available for the exercises.


Day 1: Basic Geoprocessing with QGIS

Day 1 teaches the basics of using QGIS for general geoprocessing tasks. The syllabus is:

  • Setting up / installing QGIS (optional)
  • Reading in spatial data (rasters and vectors)
  • Managing different raster and vector data formats
  • Projections in QGIS, specifying customized projections
  • Producing publication-quality maps in QGIS
  • Data editing. Adding layers / editing layers. Coordinate geometry, bearings and distances


Day 2: Extending QGIS

This day teaches how to build upon the basics using QGIS plugins and writing your own extensions. The syllabus is:

  • Bringing in QGIS extensions via the QGIS package manager. How to install 3rd-party extensions.
  • QGIS processing extension: a visual tool for chaining processes together.
  • Serving / publishing data through QGIS server.
  • Introduction to making custom QGIS extensions
