Open Dialogue is a person-centred, innovative and inclusive approach to counselling. It understands an individual's experience in the context of their family and social network, and aims to activate the person's psychological resources. Developed in Finland to help people with psychosis, Open Dialogue has been shown to be effective in improving clinical and functional outcomes. The approach is now used in a variety of mental health and social recovery settings in Scandinavia, the UK, the US and Australia.

A key element of Open Dialogue is dialogical practice, which requires therapists to be present, mindful, collaborative, able to sit with uncertainty, and skilled in responding and reflecting in a transparent manner. Dialogical practice allows the individual - as well as members of their family and social network - to be heard, empowered, and actively involved in the individual's recovery process.

This introductory session will provide you not only with an overview of Open Dialogue but will also let you practice some of the techniques used in open dialogue that you can adapt to your own counselling practice.

Renata Porzig-Drummond is a lecturer at the Australian College of Applied Psychology in Sydney and a highly experienced professional development facilitator, specialising in the field of applied psychology and mental health.
