Event description
A weekend workshop for beginners, to create a small, beautiful needle lace sampler.

About this event

Hello Melbourne! Get ready for: Introduction to Needle Lace: VICTORIAN EDITION.

I’ll be running an introductory needle lace workshop in Melbourne this July.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners. Even if you’ve never picked up a needle before, you’ll be able to join in.

Over two days, you’ll learn how to set up a piece of needle lace, stitch some ground stitches and outline and detail your work. You’ll walk away with a beautiful lace sampler and some VERY impressive needle wielding skills.

WHY SHOULD YOU DO THIS COURSE?

So many reasons. Here's a list:

  • Needle lace is a gorgeous technique. Its history stretches back to the 16th century. It pops up in different styles and iterations around Europe, from the ruffs around the neck of queen Elizabeth I, to the beautiful experiments with fishing nets on the islands around Venice.
  • It is complex and detailed but is made up of simple principals and so it’s easy enough to pick up.
  • It is SLOW. Prepare for some serious mindfulness. If meditative stitching is your thing, this is VERY MUCH the process for you.

WHY SHOULD YOU LEARN WITH ME?

I’m a contemporary lace maker and artist who has been working in needle lace for six years. I have studied in England, Italy, the Netherlands and around Australia, in a combination of historical needle lace techniques. I combine the techniques of Punto in Aria, Aemilia Ars, Venetian Gros Point and others to make contemporary works which are exhibited regularly here in Australia and occasionally the USA.

WHEN IS IT? 17th and 18th of July, 2021. 10am-3pm both days.

AND WHERE? Siteworks 33 Saxon st, Brunswick VIC, 3056

HOW MUCH?

$265.00. This covers both days and all materials.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

Nothing! I’ll provide all the materials for the course. (Except maybe bring a snack, we’ll include a half hour lunch break both days to refuel and rest your eyes and hands. There are café’s nearby too.) Ooh also, definitely bring glasses if you wear them. As I mentioned. There’s a lot of fine detail here.
