Event description
A comprehensive one day introduction to the ideas and foundational skills of Motivational Interviewing

About this Event

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative and goal oriented approach for facilitating change through exploring and resolving ambivalence about change. Developed in the late 1980's by William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD, MI continues researched (over 300 clinical trails) and disseminated around the world. Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based skill that, when done properly, can facilitate change across a range of settings and client concerns. MI has become one for the foundational skills for helping with behaviour change across a broad range of settings.

This interactive workshop with Dr Joel Porter is ideal for people who are new to MI or if it has been a few years since your last training. The workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to the ideas behind MI and the foundational skills to get on the path of becoming proficient in MI.

Participants will learn MI through didactic discussions, observation, skills building exercises and practice with feedback. This workshop will be of interest to people in diverse settings and circumstances where conversations about change are an everyday reality.

This interactive workshop will include

An Overview of MI and its foundations in good practice in human service organisations and agencies

Review of key topics like core skills, change language and the four processes in change conversations. Ample Opportunity to practice skills and discussions

Exploring of the latest topics including MI-consistent advice-giving, culture change in organisation, brief conversations about change and how our emotional state affects the progress and outcome of conversations.

A wide range of learning methods will be used to create an enjoyable atmosphere for learning and sharing ideas. These will include demonstration, video observation, content lectures, discussion and focused practice.

Goal

At the conclusion of this participants will recognize their strengths and confidence as a beginning MI practitioner, identify areas for continued development, include areas where they want to learn more, and have a plan for deliberately practicing MI skills.
