Event description

Description

  • Do you wonder what will happen to your child with a disability when you can no longer support them?

  • Do you want to be able employ your own supports to provide the kind of care your family member needs?

  • Got lots of great ideas for a great life but struggling to be able to do it all on your own?

  • Do you want the flexibility of self managing NDIS funds but worried about doing it all on your own?

A microboard is a network of trusted people including family and friends who freely give their time to support a person with disability to imagine, plan and safeguard the good life the person with a disability seeks. This network is formalised by becoming an incorporated association.

When the main carers like parents or siblings are unable to support their family member due to death, old age or ill health having a Microboard means that the person with a disability still has people around them that know them really well and can support them to continue building a good life. The legal structure of a Microboard ensures accountability to the person with a disability.

The microboard can also support families or individuals to self manage their ndis funds. It’s a great way to stay in control of your ndis funding but get the support of others who love and care about the person with a disability and share the workload of self management.

Topics Covered

  • what a microboard is
  • why you might want to set one up
  • how they help people with disability to live a good life even without parents
  • how to gather people to form your microboard
  • what kinds of activities they can do
  • the differences between a circle of support and a microboard
  • the important underlying values and beliefs that drive how microboards act

You will hear stories of people who have set up a microboard around their child with a disability and learn about the services that Microboards Australia offers.

We will also provide you with information on how to request funding through the NDIS to support microboard development.

Microboards Australia is the only organisation in Australia that is endorsed by Vela Microboards to support microboard development. Vela Microboards is the organisation that founded Microboards over 30 years ago in Canada.

The Presenter

Jaquie Mills is the Managing Director of Microboards Australia. As the mother of a son with complex disability and behaviours which can be challenging, Jaqueline Mills struggled to imagine a future for Eli. In 2006, Jaquie and her partner Darryl mortgaged their house to fly to North America seeking a solution. That solution came in the form of a concept called a ‘microboard’. Eli, who has severe cognitive and physical disabilities requiring 24-hour care, has a microboard which has supported his life goals - an active social life, his own business, a girlfriend and living independently in his own home.
