About this Event

Overview

Presenter - Lev Lafayette

Workshop offered by Research Computing Services

Are you a life science researcher with desktop system that isn’t adequate for your big datasets or the complex research problems? It’s time to learn more about High Performance Computing (HPC). The University of Melbourne HPC system, Spartan, is freely available to researchers.

This introductory course will provide an introduction to the Linux command line and give you an overview of Spartan.

Learning objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • write a Slurm script.
  • submit data or task parallel jobs to Spartan.
  • run research applications.

Prerequisites and Requirements

This workshop does not require any previous experience.

This is a hands-on workshop and attendees must bring their own laptops to the workshop and have the following:

  • Access to Uniwireless/Eduroam
  • If you have an MS Windows machine, you will need to install the SSH client PuTTY. (Linux and Macs do not require any action.)
  • get an account on Spartan prior to attending, and join ‘punim0001’: http://dashboard.unimelb.edu.au/karaage

Most workshops are FREE for all researchers and students from the University of Melbourne and its affiliated research institutes. For details of charges for external participants please see the Melbourne Bioinformatics Training page.

Building Access

Please note that the venue for the workshop, 187 Grattan St (Building 257), does not have an accessible entrance. There are a number of steps leading from street level up to the ground floor entrance and there are no accessible toilets available in the building.
