Introduction to Homesteading Basics
Event Information
About this Event
While its anything but the 'simple life', it certainly connects you deeply to the natural world, demands you beat to a seasonal drum and rewards you with home grown food in abundance.Homesteading can be a full time job and requires skills which are slowly being forgotten as we find more and more of us are city based and exist in 9-5 jobs. But for those who seek something else for life, homesteading is a diverse, rewarding and nurturing way to live. This 4 hour workshop will begin with a brief overview of our transition and highlight some of the best parts and most challenging parts of living this way.You will be taken on a tour to look at functioning examples of bee hives, saved seed collections, a solar oven, a hoop house, a humane chicken culling setup, a worm farm, rotating chicken pens, wicking beds, our kitchen garden & kitchen/pantry setup.
Then we will showcase a range of simple activities for you to try at home with the things you'll need to get started + take home print outs to guide you. (Organic garlic to plant out, fresh roses and lavender to dry for rose/lavender oil, beeswax and cotton cloth to make beeswax wraps, seeds for your spring patch, dried orange peel for fire starters, worm juice for your veggie garden...We will share a home made afternoon tea midway through which is a great time to take cuttings from our garden and take a stroll around Black Barn Farm at your own pace.
