TWO DAY COURSE

This course is designed for dental professionals with an interest in Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) and its incorporation into your practice to improve both your patient health and practice offering.

Day One: Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a chronic condition characterised by frequent episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep. Its effect on sleep quality, daytime fatigue and sleepiness are widely acknowledged. OSA is recognised as an associated risk factor for the development of hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, and insulin resistance among other conditions.

Current guidelines recommend that dental management of OSA patients with mandibular advancement devices (MADs) should be overseen by practitioners who have undertaken training in sleep medicine and sleep-related breathing disorders and understand clinical protocols for diagnosis, treatment and follow-ups.

Day One Objectives - Participants will:

  • Obtain information about the impact of sleep disorders on public health; pathophysiology, risk factors, and treatment options of OSA.
  • Gain an Understanding of patient and MADs selection through Clinical cases based learning.
  • Recognise the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the management of OSA.
  • Future learning opportunities to be discussed.

At the end of day one, participants will gain an understanding about the Dentist’s role in the inter-disciplinary approach for the management of OSA patients and recognise the importance of integrating into practice updated clinical guidelines and protocols.
