What you need to know:

This course will run over two consecutive days Sat & Sun, arrive for a prompt start. The course will present the skills a beginning beekeeper needs to get started with a hive. The fee includes a take home copy of the Bee Keeping Manual. At the conclusion of the course beginners will have met several of the GCABS Club members who will assist with practical activities over the course and establish mentoring connections for new members. The aim is for participants to attain a level of understanding to move on to managing their own hive.

Participants will need personal protective equipment (PPE) for Day 2.

**Make sure PPE fits before coming to the course on Sunday*** .

Please have your PPE ready to go. We will proceed straight to the hives and start smokin'.

Everything you need to bring on day 2 is listed here:

  • Full cover protective clothing: loose fitting long sleeves and trousers.
  • Substantial closed-in shoes, long socks that can be tucked over cuffs of trousers.
  • Hat and veil (you can buy a cheap fly net from camping shops and attach it over a broad brimmed hat rather than buy an expensive bee suit),
  • Gloves that cover the cuffs of shirt sleeves.
  • Light colours are preferable
  • Paper and pen: water bottle.
  • If you have a severe allergy response to beestings please bring your own epipen.

*Do a dress rehearsal of your PPE prior to the course and check all fits/covers. Nothing worse than putting it on at the course and finding gaps!

Beekeeping suppliers can supply beekeeping suits, jackets, hats and veils. Details can be found on the web, try these sites:

Basic morning /afternoon tea while be provided at break time. If you need further nourishment bring it along and feel welcome to eat throughout the morning, as 4 hours is a long stretch.

At the end of the course we aim to have you at a stage where, with further club support and guidance, you are ready to manage your own bee colony. Contacts to breeders and suppliers will be communicated on the course.
