Description

A practical and creative guide to audio description, and interpretive access practice that makes the visual verbal to enhance access to visual media for people who are Blind or have low vision. Audio description teaches describers how to see differently, and prioritise information based on the needs of the Blind and low vision community.

This course offers a taste of description of narrative media, static objects, and human movement. Participants will work together to theorise about narrative media from the soundtrack alone, then identify descriptive strategies. They will also collaborate to produce a description of a static object, and play a game designed to stimulate creative description of movement.

We then debrief on the experience, and run a “You Can’t Ask That” style Q+A with participants to build their knowledge of the lived experience of Blindness and low vision.

  • Producers, curators, and experience designers.

  • Teaching artists and trainers.

  • Staff from Disability service organisations and agencies.

Learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of Blindness and the spectrum of low vision.

  • An awareness of the Social Model of Disability.

  • An understanding of the theoretical basis for Audio Description.

  • An understanding of how Audio Description functions in narrative media.

  • An understanding of how to use language to describe objects, and

  • An understanding of how to use language to describe movement.

Description Victoria creates accessible and inclusive experiences for people who are Blind or have low vision, and is the state’s leading provider of professional audio description services. We facilitated over 50 accessible and inclusive experiences in 2019, and have led workshops and conversations with RMIT Creative, University of Melbourne’s Union House Theatre, City of Wodonga, and more.

We work at the intersection of Blindness and the arts, cultural, and recreational sectors, and we are uniquely positioned to offer a range of training, awareness, and capacity-building programs to organisations and individuals.

Description Victoria Inc. is a registered charity with a majority of board members who have a lived experience of Blindness or low vision. Our service is led by the community it serves, and informed by the Social Model of Disability.
