This series is designed for those who are new to being on boards or management committees, or who are unsure of what their basic responsibilities are. If you have new board members who have just come on board at your AGM, this is a perfect way to introduce them to their responsibilities.
Based on the Queensland Shelter Manual, Governance for Community Housing Organisations: An Introductory Guide, it will take board members through the basics of being on a board.
This webinar series will be presented by Jon Eastgate, 99 Consulting.
This is a 4-part series commencing 5/11/15 occuring every Thursday until the 26/11/15.
5th Nov: Who’s in charge around here? Governance and the Board.
This session will introduce the idea of good governance and talk about electing and running your board. Issues covered include:
- What is Governance?
- The Principles of Good Governance
- Responsibilities of the Board
- Recruiting Good Board Members
- Succession Planning
12th Nov: Setting the Direction: Strategic, Operational and Risk Planning
This session will cover the Board’s responsibility to steer and oversee the direction of the organisation and will cover:
- The Board’s planning responsibilities
- Strategic Planning
- Operational Planning
- Financial Oversight
- Risk Management
19th Nov: Getting the Job Done: Staff, Volunteers, Delegation and Honesty
This session will look at how the Board delegates the day to day running of the organisation, whether to staff or to volunteers. How does the board delegate tasks, while still ensuring things are done properly. Topics include:
- The Board’s Staffing Responsibilities
- Delegating responsibility
- Keeping people accountable
- Managing conflicts of Interest
26th Nov: On the Right Side of the Law: Compliance
This session will look at the legal environment community housing organisations operate within and how to ensure you stay legal. Topics include:
- Key laws you need to comply with
- How to make sure you comply
- What to do if you find out you haven’t
