About this Event
- Session 1 is open to Support Coordinators, LAC & NDIA planners, service providers, other community members, people with disability, their family and allies.
- Session 2 is for people with disability, their family members and allies to stay on and take a deeper dive to learn about whether a Circle of Support is for you and what that might look like. *Participants must attend Session 1 as preparation for the afternoon session. A light lunch will be provided for people attending for the full day
What is a Circle of Support?
A Circle of Support is a group of people who are intentionally invited to come together in friendship and support of a person who has a disability, for the purposes of protecting the person's interests into the future.
Circles of Support are underpinned by principles of inclusion.
What to expect
Session 1: Introducing Circles of Support (9.30am to 12 noon)
This presentation is open to all and will explore:
• what a Circle of Support is and is not
• why a Circle of Support can be important
• how freely given relationships can provide safeguarding in the lives of vulnerable people
• real stories about Circles of Support bringing about change in people's lives
Session 2: Practical workshop (12:30pm to 3pm)
The afternoon practical workshop specifically for people with disability, their family and allies will get people actively engaged in:
• understanding how a Circle of Support can be formed
• identifying potential circle members and how to invite them
• why it’s important to articulate a vision
About the presenter
Jayne Barrett has been leading the Circles initiative at Community Living Project for more than 20 years. She has presented about Circles of Support, the value of freely-given relationships and safeguarding across Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. Jayne is a strong advocate for strengthening valued roles for people with disability.
Taryn Waters is the Project Lead and event host. She brings lived experience navigating an inclusive path and planning for the future as a parent of a child with disability.
Circle of Support facilitators will share insights from their experience working to articulate a person's vision for their life and supporting Circle of Support members to carry out their role to honour the vision.
