Event description

Description

This is a two-day crash course that provides a comprehensive introduction to the technology that underlies cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Included in the course package is a hardware wallet (worth ~$100) for securely storing cryptocurrencies and $50 worth of Bitcoin and Ether. Tickets are available for each day individually, and all tickets are available with or without the wallet and coins.

Requirements: Day 1 is an introduction accessible to anyone, with or without a background in computer science. The only requirements are curiosity and concentration. However, parts of Day 2 involve hands on programming, and will not be as accessible to those with no experience programming. That said, if you have even basic grasp of the command line (you've used the terminal and git and have typed some commands in any programming language), you should be ok.

Day 1 - Introduction (August 19th, 10:00am - 4:00pm):

A comprehensive overview of the blockchain ecosystem, including detailed understanding of how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, and a basic knowledge of how to use them as currencies.

OUTLINE:

- Background on the Internet, Finance, and Cryptography

- Consensus and Mining: how to create trust from untrustworthy components

- Bitcoin: the worlds first decentralized digital currency - or cryptocurrency

- Ethereum: general purpose computing and "smart contracts" with cryptocurrencies

- The Wider Blockchain Ecosystem: cryptocurrency technology threatens to disrupt *every* industry

- Wallets: receive your cryptocurrency wallet and learn to use Bitcoin and Ethereum

Day 2 - Technical Deep Dive (August 20th, 10:00am - 4:00pm):

Hands-on understanding of how to use the more advanced features of Bitcoin, how to program smart contracts in solidity and deploy them on the Ethereum network, and how to build custom blockchain applications in javascript (or any other language) using Tendermint.

OUTLINE:

- Introduction to the world of blockchain development

- Advanced bitcoin transactions - multisig, atomic swap, payment channels

- Smart contracts on Ethereum - introduction to solidity and the Ethereum Virtual Machine environment

- Blockchain applications on Tendermint - build a custom blockchain application in javascript, or your language of choice

Please note that Day 2 involves more hands on programming experience.
