Talk: 7pm - Into the Heart of Fire Ant Country. A Road Trip Through Southern USA. A talk by Invasive Species Council CEO Andrew Cox.
In May this year Andrew Cox ventured into the heart of fire ant country in the US to discover what it’s like to live in a land infested by highly aggressive invasive fire ants.
As CEO of the Invasive Species Council in Australia he wanted to get a taste of what it would be if we fail to eradicate this fearsome menace, currently contained in south east Queensland to an area roughly the size of the ACT.
Hear stories Andrew collected from people he encountered in southern US where the highly invasive red fire ants are out of control across 15 states.
While it is too late for the USA, in Australia we are in the middle of a $700 million battle to stay fire ant free. A battle we may not win.
If you care about the future of nature in Australia, you need to know about this tiny, painful and highly successful invasive ant.
The talk will be followed by nibbles and drinks. While you will see plenty of fire ants, we promise there will be no live fire ant stings!
