The Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce is chaired by the former President of the Queensland Court of Appeal, the Honourable Margaret McMurdo AC.
In 2001 Justice McMurdo was awarded the Centenary Medal and later appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (2007) for service to the law and judicial administration in Queensland, particularly in the areas of legal education and women's issues. In 2006 her Honour was presented the Agnes McWhinney Award for outstanding professional contribution by a woman lawyer.
The work of the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce is crucial in looking at what barriers women face when they report on violence committed against them and to look at laws that will keep women safe and hold perpetrators to account,
Danielle and Rhys Carroll (Danielle loving Sister of Kelly Wilkinson, and Rhys loving Brother-in-Law to Kelly) who are now sharing their lives with Kelly's 3 Children since losing Kelly last year to domestic violence. Danielle and Rhys now have 8 children and will share their story of where to from here and the very strong bond in their relationship that keeps them going one day at a time.
Natalie Lewis, Commissioner Queensland Family and Child Commission; Ms Lewis, a Gamilaraay woman, brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge from her distinguished over 20-year career in youth justice, child and family services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.Ms Lewis will support Principal Commissioner Cheryl Vardon with a strong and renewed focus on the systemic and structural issues disproportionately affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Sandra Creamer, interim CEO of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Alliance and an adjunct Professor with the University of Queensland. Creamer started as the Indigenous Community Liaison Officer with Legal Aid Queensland working with Indigenous women and children who were victims of crime. She also conducted legal information workshops and assisted in cases of racial discrimination and family law. Creamer advocates for Indigenous women, and it is important to her that they are always included in consultation and negotiations. She writes, “When women are included, it is then a collective voice from a community group. Indigenous women also need respect for their views and opinions—for Indigenous women and children have the right to live in a safe environment and be free from any forms of violence.
