About this event

International Non-Binary Day is observed each year on July 14 since 2012. This date falls precisely in the middle between International Men’s Day and International Women’s day.

Non-binary, also known as gender queer, is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine — identities that are outside the gender binary.

Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders, having no gender, moving between genders or having a fluctuating gender identity, or being third gender or other-gendered, a category that includes those who do not place a name to their gender.

Awareness and education are crucial to achieving equal rights for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Join us for this panel discussion to learn more about the non-binary community and the importance of observing International Non-Binary Day.

Panellists:

Marlena Dali - The multiple award deserving, 2nd best David Bowie impersonator, Marlena Dalí (aka Tranz Kafka) is the manifestation of chaotic gender expression filtered through the art of clown and exquisite drag. Their background in performance art blends fabulously with their more than decade-long career as stage entertainer to present a truly genuine and surreal experience. You can catch them regularly hosting "The Oyster Club" and they're a frequent performer at many of Sydney's vibrant drag events such as Drag N' Dine, Queerbourhood, and Heaps Gay. From The Venice Beach Freakshow, to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Marlena can transform the crass to class and still serve you a side of sass.

Etcetera Etcetera is a hypercolour hollywood starlet reborn into the modern universe. A dazzling host and a delightful performer, Etcetera creates memorable moments in theatre, nightclubs, television, film & online. A visible non-binary artist, their activism has created a genuine and vocal fanbase - beyond the world of drag and into the mainstream. Just as their name suggests, there’s only more to come.

Dr Jessica Kean is an Academic Fellow in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney. Her teaching and research focuses on gender, sexuality and intimacy. She has two current research projects: the first explores practices of consensual non-monogamy and the second investigates the way we teach boys about gender and feminism. Alongside her teaching in Gender and Cultural Studies, Jessica supervises University's Industry and Community Project Units on a wide range of topics, including domestic violence, climate change, and workplace diversity and inclusion.

Facilitator:

Daniele Gianotti is an Education Design and Delivery Officer working in the Professional Education in Health (PEH) team at the University of Sydney, the Deputy Co-Chair of the Pride Network and the LGBTIQ+ Student Support Liaison Officer for the Sydney Medical School. Daniele is also an artist and performs as gender fluid Drag QueeR (not drag queen), Miss Understood.
