Event description
FREE Online Seminar exploring International Family Mediation and International Parental Child Abduction.

About this Event

Each year in Australia, hundreds of children are abducted by a parent and taken overseas. As well as children being taken from Australia, many who live overseas are abducted by a parent and brought into the country. International parental child abduction has become an unfortunate reality for many separated multicultural families. To combat this, an international agreement known as the 1980 Hague Convention was established.

In honour of the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Hague Convention, International Parental Child Abduction Experts from the International Social Service (ISS) Australia will come together to explore the use and effectiveness of mediation in Hague Convention matters.

The experts:

  • Amanda Humphreys - Amanda is an accredited family law specialist with a special interest and expertise in international family law matters, including international relocation and child abduction cases. She is a recommended leading children’s and parenting matters lawyer (Doyle’s Guide, Vic, 2019 and 2020), a fellow and governor of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), an active member of the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and has written and co-authored papers on international family law issues presented in Australia and overseas. Amanda undertook cross-border mediation training in Japan in 2015 with a focus on Japanese-Australian family disputes and child abduction cases and continues to be involved in initiatives to support the mediation of such disputes.
  • Rebecca Chapman - Rebecca is the Managing Lawyer of ISS Australia’s Legal Service. Specialising in international parental child abduction law, Rebecca has over 10 years experience in government and not-for-profit sectors, as well as a background in criminal and family law.
  • Kay Hardefeldt - Kay is a qualified Social Worker, mediator and manager of ISS’ International Family Mediation Service. In addition to ten years with ISS Australia, Kay has worked in statutory child protection services at the Department of Health and Human Services.

The webinar will be facilitated by ISS Australia CEO, Peter van Vliet. Peter has extensive senior experience in both the government and non-government sectors. Peter has held senior executive positions with the (then) Commonwealth Department of Immigration and also with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
