International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
Event Information
Description
Dear Colleagues
In occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, World Poetry Day and International Day of Forests on the 21 March 2018, we would like to invite you to a Photography Exhibition and Seminar on the Rohingya refugee crisis at Swinburne University of Technology.
The Rohingya community in Myanmar has experienced unconscionable brutality from the Myanmar army. Hundreds of Rohingya villages have been burnt, thousands of people killed and raped, and millions terrorised. The army’s action was planned, coordinated and targeted. The UN confirmed that more than 780,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August 2017 and points to “textbook example of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.” The keynote will be addressed by Professor Masudur Rahman from the University of Nordland, Norway, followed by a discussion that will be moderated by Professor Christine Jubb of Swinburne Business School. A large international collaborative research project on “Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Repatriation of Rohingya (RRR,R) will be launched during the event. A team of international researchers, institutions and development organisations from the east and west will be carrying out the project in Bangladesh.
Photographer Salahuddin Ahmad’s Photographic exhibition will showcase evocative photos of Rohingya refugees taken in November 2017 in Ukhia and Teknaf in Bangladesh. This not-for-profit exhibition series presents the photographer’s experiences, the stories he heard, and the plight of these severely disadvantaged people, in order to raise global awareness.
