Event Details

This 90 minute evening lecture will overview the Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) model of psychotherapy developed by Richard Schwartz PhD.  IFS is increasingly recognised as an effective and useful treatment for trauma informed practice, attachment repair, the high prevalence disorders of anxiety and depression, as well as relationship counselling. It has recently been entered to the US NREPP's register of evidence based practices as effective for treating general functioning and wellbeing.

The Center for Self Leadership's Australian International Partner Simon d'Orsogna MA will also offer an Introductory IFS weekend workshop (31st August & 1st September) ahead of the further intermediate workshops and upcoming Level 1 & 2 Trainings in later 2019-20 in the region. As an individual and family therapist Simon founded these trainings in Australia and brought the first official IFS trainings to the region, including bringing the Trauma and Neuroscience Level 2 to Vietnam in December 2018.

Internal Family Systems

Developed over the past three decades, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is an evidence-based therapy that offers both a conceptual umbrella under which a variety of practices and different approaches can be grounded and guided, and a set of original techniques. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is the most comprehensive model now emerging as the dominant therapeutic modality which regards the personality as a system of subpersonalities.

Schwartz’s model states that in addition to the many parts that constitute the system, we also all have a Self. The Self is characterized by the presence of the following qualities: calmness, clarity, curiosity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity and connectedness and has “emergent compassion, lucidity, and wisdom to get to know and care for these inner personalities”. It is the client’s Self that is responsible for healing their own system; this model does not foster dependency on the therapist.

Who is this for?

Participation is for therapists and counsellors, mental health clinicians, certified coaches, expressive arts therapists or students in accredited graduate training programs. Practitioners working experientially and wholistically will find this approach broadens and makes more acute their existing work through using the steps of the IFS 'parts' model, especially suitable for working with trauma, obsessions and intergenerational burdens.

Lecture audience size

The size of this Introductory workshop is limited to 45. Early registration is encouraged. Previous workshops have sold out early and the certification trainings have been waitlisted.

Ticketing fees from this lecture will be donated to Amnesty International's refugee fund-raising.
