Event description

Description

Our Design Session is perfect for those commencing a renovation or new build. While it can be exciting to create a space to suit your exact requirements, it can be daunting to know where to start. This session runs over two consecutive Saturdays, and offers one-on-one consultation time with Lauren. You will be provided with design advice on areas such as general layout, materials and fixtures. You will understand how to organize your project into manageable stages so that by the end of the session, you have a clear direction on your next steps.

With classes capped at seven students there is plenty of opportunities to learn and share. Covering key areas such as layout, materials, fixtures, appliances and lighting, the small group setting means everyone gets the air time they need. With access to a working materials library, students can dive in and select from a range of samples in stone, timber, tiles, wallpapers and fabrics to compile their own materials board. You will not only leave feeling inspired, but with a clear direction of what to do next to get your project happening. You will see how an interior design professional uses a process to systematically approach a project from generating a concept, to developing the design into documents in order for the contractors to price, and build from.

We cover the basics to get your project on track, broken down into categories designers use:
- Materials: Exploring the limitations and advantages of various finishes such as benchtops, flooring, tiles, stone, timber and carpet options. We share our ‘Little Black Book’ so that you can source some very special finishes.
- Fixtures: Exploring everything from tapware, basins, drawer runners, hooks and even toilet paper holders. We even reveal the importance of the very special relationship between tap and basin!
- Lighting: An issue very close to Lauren’s heart, this topic covers the importance of the lighting plan. Let Lauren show you key steps to get the most out of your space through good lighting.
- Layout: Lauren lists the most common mistakes made in overall spatial planning as well as the importance of sight lines, useful storage and furniture placement.
- Plans & elevations: This is a hands-on session that doesn’t get too bogged down in details, however it is useful to understand the basics on reading the plans and elevations provided by your consultant (architect, draftsperson or engineer).
- Studio time to work on your project and a consultation with Lauren.

What’s Included
Access to the studio’s live materials library and take away up to five samples.
Materials and mountboard to create your concept board.
A precious ‘Little Black Book’ of hard finishes supplier and contractor details. This is a digital document.

A delicious Ladro pizza lunch (please advise of dietary requirements), wine (let’s get creative!), and complementary tea and refreshments from our apartment kitchen.

What to bring
Work digitally or by hand, the choice is yours!
Inspiring images - from magazines, tear-sheets or online.
A laptop and charger cords if you intend to work digitally.
Photos of your space/spaces. Take a photo from every corner of the space so that they can be stitched together so that there is a clear understanding of the room. Videos can also be useful.
Any samples such flooring or existing surfaces – whatever you have!
A floorplan - www.realestate.com can be a good source for this. Include one overall measurement of each main wall. If you have already engaged an architect, building designer or draftsperson please bring any relevant drawings.

Note that interior design is complex and the interiors for your project will not be designed in this session, rather the tools are provided in order for you to design yourself. The more information you can bring, the better!
