Event Details

Australia is a vibrant, dynamic and complex multicultural society. Almost half our population in 2016 was either born overseas or had one parent born overseas.

Elected members and Council officers are at the frontline of promoting, managing and mediating the day to day interactions of multicultural Australia at the local level.

As our communities become more diverse and complex, our ability to access new ideas, networks and support to respond to emerging issues becomes increasingly important.

The Council of Europe's Intercultural Cities Programme and Australia's iGen Foundation invite you to a forum with two Intercultural Cities Experts: Cr Bruno Ciancio and Lynda Ford.

Cr Bruno Ciancio, will overview key social cohesion, refugee welcoming and anti-racism programs throughout the network of cities.

Lynda Ford will set the Australian context for interculturalism - how building on the strengths of multiculturalism will ensure a place for everyone - overseas-born, Indigenous and Australian-born non-Indigenous people - in Australia's future.

Hear about what's happening to harness the benefits of diversity from the Council of Europe's Intercultural Cities Programme. This network consists of more than 150 Cities across more than 30 countries.

Learn how cities are dealing with the emergence of the far right in their streets and towns; how communities are innovatively engaging with negative media and how culturally diverse business owners are an important driver for the economic development of cities.

Find out what's working, what's not and what's promising. Get some new ideas about social innovation in refugee settlement, intercultural practice and social inclusion.

Think about how can you can contribute to the knowledge of other cities - both in Australia and around the world - about the innovative work you're doing that brings together people from different cultural backgrounds.

Ask a panel of Australian local government representatives about how you can use existing resources to promote intercultural relationships within your communities.

This inaugural event is hosted by the City of Ballarat, the first Australian city endorsed by the Council of Europe as an Intercultural City.

This forum will be attended by local government elected members and officers interested in understanding more about how intercultural practice can enhance social and economic outcomes for their city.

Numbers are strictly limited so book now to secure your place.

RSVP by Friday, July 28
